Imagine if you knew that you only had a limited amount of energy to spend each day…and that that energy is spent in thoughts, words, movements. Each time you have a thought you spend your precious energy. Each time you move your body you spend energy. Each time you speak…you spend energy.
Well it’s a fact you do only have a certain amount of energy to spend each day…that is why the body needs to sleep….to re-set. This precious energy is the resource that produces healthy functioning through your body/mind system. This energy that powers all of the intricate systems of your body/mind is precious and limited.
It should therefore be respected…honoured…used wisely…resourcefully – if you want to function at your optimum level of functioning….if you want to prevent stress related illness and mental fatigue that can lead to mental illness..
You see we have not been trained how to use our energy resourcefully…especially us Westeners. We have been trained to believe that ‘there’s no gain without pain’…you gotta ‘go hard’ or go home…‘shop till you drop’….’There’s only one winner’… We have been conditioned to believe that ‘effort’ is somehow honourable….that mental effort will ‘fix’ the problem. The truth is excess effort causes unnecessary tension which produces stress hormones in the body…which ultimately causes the breakdown of the organs.
It’s a fallacy…A BIG FAT LIE that you should always be trying hard and effortfully for best results…
Western cultural conditioning has created a perspective…mindset or belief that life is supposed to be hard…challenging and difficult….e.g that to learn anything we must study ‘hard’….to become ‘someone’ worth being we must ‘strive’ towards perfection…continuous effort towards ‘more…more…more’.
The truth is so much simpler and easier than all that.
It is being widely recognised now in medical fieds that to function at our optimal level of mental functioning…to be our most intelligent when it comes to dealing with the challenges in life we need to be in our most ‘effortless’ state of being.
In our effortless state our brain fuctions so much more efficiently and effectively…in our effortless state our brain produces the most intelligent solutions to our problems…you see our brain is the problem solver and does a much better job when our energy is not wasted in excess mental rumination…speech and movement….we need only allow the solutions to find their own way to the surface of our conscious awareness…like letting a cork float.
It is well documented that when studying you will learn much more easily and you are more likely to retain what you learn if you are relaxed..collaborating and having fun….and when recalling memories (during exams) the hippocampus (where memory is stored) will play nicely if it’s not flooded with cortisol and adrenalin (stress hormone)…So effortlessness…relaxation.. is the key to accessing our higher intelligence.
Being effortless does not mean ‘motionless’ or lazy.
Being effortLESS means exerting less psychological and physical effort…i.e being tension free in the body/mind as much as possible…holding mental or physical tension uses copious amount of our precious energy…it is unnecessary and we then have less energy to spend in the vital functioning of the brain and other organs – so our ‘vitality’ and mental clarity is diminished.
When we are as much as possible tension free in the mind and body we begin operating at a higher mental…emotional and physical level. Basically we become naturally more mentally, emotionally and physically intelligent and aligned; we find solutions to any issues more easily. We become more energised and vitalised in the physical body.
It really is about completely reevaluating the way that you approach life….the way most of us have been trained to live is flawed…so it is now about beginning to understand that less is actually MUCH more.
It is our birthright to feel free…aligned and contented in every moment…if you are not feeling aligned and tension free then you need to check out your inner dialogue – what is the voice inside your head saying?…Does it serve you? Is it creating a tension free atmosphere? If not – then STOP IT!…How is the body feeling – is there tension anywhere or strain – if so – release it (breath work…meditation…yoga helps here).
When we feel mentally clear and physically energised we are aligned and in balance…our natural state….tension free.
It is our work to cultivate an awareness of our internal states..so that we can find balance/alignment in every moment and adjust accordingly if we sense imbalance i.e unnecessary tension.
As with everything else – like learning to ride a bike…learning to walk or write – although initially challenging it will become second nature to be in your truest state of alignment and balance….IT IS YOUR BIRTHRIGHT!…
We can begin cultivating more internal awareness of our inner processes (critical voice in the head/ unnecessary tensions held in the body) through meditation and yoga.
As we cultivate awareness of our inner terrain we can then naturally begin to release tension – in the releasing of unnecessary tension we immediatlely have more energy available that the inner intelligence can then naturally direct towards our optimal functioning…naturally.
